I'm happy to say that I'm no longer with Wells Fargo, because I could never get on top of my finances, especially when I was getting charged $35 overdraft fees. They reversed a few, then told me they couldn't do that anymore, and one day I ended up with ELEVEN overdraft fees. In one day. Yes, $385 worth. These big banks rape and abuse the people who are in the most vulnerable financial situations. I'm now with a credit union and digging myself out of that hole which my other bank helped throw me into.

I thought I saw you on tv today, but it was happy hour and the sound wasn't on so I couldn't hear what you said. Sorry you have to deal with such craziness. I love my credit union, but I almost never visit the building downtown. I really just use their services and benefit from the better interest rates.

i am the queen of money issues that are not my fault - three different times while traveling i've had my cards and/or purse stolen. and every time, my credit union has been AMAZING about working with me to get everything taken care of ASAP (including having suspicious charges reimbursed in full). my overdraft fees are $5. i've never had to wait more than a few hours for a check to be cleared. the only disadvantage is that the closest location is 20 minutes from my house - but i can deal with that!! definitely join a CU.

Only go with small banks. All other banks will fuck you over. I go with Woodforest National Bank but here is something my mother emailed me:

My old credit union started hiding pending charges (you sometimes could actually see them and then they would disappear) when you were low on cash and then you would make a bigger purchase thinking you still had enough to cover it and they would crash all those little pending charges down on you at once causing you to have 7 or more overdraft fee's of 30 bucks each (I shit you not.) but I switched when I moved and so far I love my current bank but that might be because it's local and well... honest.

Also, I just wanted to add that if I had an overdraft problem (something that I felt was their fault, not mine) they were excellent about working with me and dropped the overdraft fees. This has happened more than once and I think I'd be hard pressed to go back to a bank after using a credit union.

I definitely agree. I went from a bank to the Duke Credit Union and I could not be happier. Although, the overdraft fee is $28, they have a program you can sign up for that allows you to have a $1000 overdraft protection, which you pay back like credit. I've never had a problem with my credit union, and they also don't push you to start extra accounts or apply for loans.

I highly recommend a credit union.

I'm also totally for CU's like a lot of the comments so far. If you have to/want to stay with a bank for whatever reason, I would suggest Wells Fargo. They've been pretty good with me so far, will reimburse fees if you call and explain, don't hold a lot of checks except for the usual circumstances and they don't charge me ridiculous fees for using other ATM's. BofA has been nothing but problems for everyone I know that uses them. WaMu was another good one until they merged with Chase.
