Know how to make a million dollars.... invest two million in a bar. Fun idea, dangerous and hard to pull off, especially in this economy.

I'm friends with Robin Leventhal, the "Top Chef" contestant who was owner and executive chef at Crave, which was not only a bar but a full-on restaurant. I can connect you to her if you think her advice might be helpful. :-)

I realized how Negative Nelly my previous comment sounded, and I am sorry for that. It is just that I have seen so many places close because people thought it sounded so cool to own a bar, and then get into the business, and lose everything because they just didn't have the right tools to manage the enterprise. I know you have an MBA and all (right, I think that is right?), but ... just be careful, and make sure it is really what you want to do. And please contact me of you want!!

Have you ever worked or managed a bar or restaurant before? Seriously, if you haven't, please don't go opening a bar! My husband has owned a successful bar and restaurant for over 15 years, and we have seen dozens and dozens of bars and restaurants close because people have no experience in the industry, and we are on a street with very high foot traffic and visibility, in an actual entertainment district!!

At least pick up some cocktail shifts at a bar to see what you think of the working bar culture before putting money into a business. If you start one, you will end up bartending or waiting tables to help out, and to be a good boss you have to know everyone's jobs inside and out. It is insanely expensive to start up, and even if you are in an obvious, visible spot (which you're not) it can be hard to get people to try a place, and you have no experience owning a bar-just think about it, okay? Please? I really do care about you from all this reading of your blog. Even after all these years, my husband still works 50-60 hours a week to keep his business successful, and although he does occasionally get to drink beer while working, it is not an easy business. Also, if drunk people annoy you...whoo! You'd go crazy, because you would be there all the time, especially the first few years.

Anyway this is getting really long, but Sasha, muh dear, please think about it. Like, a lot. Also, please e-mail me if you have any questions! My husband and I would love to answer them.

In addition to my big girl job (which is retail real estate), I've been in the bar industry for a decade and have opened more lounges and clubs than I can count. If you're serious and need help, feel free to email me.
