Beet! Congrats on all your success - how cool to be quoted by other sources. I'm so happy for you!

I have the same problem w/ flying - I still haven't figured out the best way to deal with it either. I always listen to my intuition and have decided I'll deplane if I ever feel funky about a flight, no matter what the cost. That and meds are the way I'm dealing right now!

I have to admit, I totally agree with that. My fear is not planes, its needles. I have many tattoos, but I see that as a pointy stick, that really isn't going into my body. Syringes are what really terrify me. Tomorrow I need to go get blood work done because i've been sick for a while now, and I was told weeks ago and I've just kept putting it off, but now that its tomorrow, and I have some anti-anxiety meds for it, I think that i'll be fine. I have no idea why it works like that, but I wish I could not be so terrified.

Also, Whoppi Goldberg is terrified about plane rides too, and she took buses and trains and boats for the longest time, so being scared of planes can happen to everyone. Good luck!

Chicago will be SO much fun. I've been living here for about a year now, and this is the best time of year. This weekend you should try to only travel by the el if you can, because it's the Taste of Chicago so traffic will be horrible. Also, if you want to go shopping, I would suggest either Bucktown or Lincoln Park. They have really fun boutiques and smaller shops (though the Bloomingdales and Nordstrom on Michigan Ave are also awesome).
Are you taking Leo? I think Chicago has to be one of most dog-friendly cities in the US. Most stores and restaurants allow small dogs... I've seen a bunch in Bloomingdales!

A-ha! Freakishly enough, I just learned about spectrums of fear in a social and behavioral science class last night. There's this theory that says that when a person's perceptions of a situation tell them that they do not have any immediate control over it, then it is a situation that is open to fear. When this situation is something that is dreaded and is perceived as potentially catastrophic then it typically results in fear. When you increase the control that person has over the situation, even if it doesn't change anything else, fear seems to decrease because we crazy people have less fear of things we are in immediate control of. (Ex: when you drive, say above the speed limit, you assume you are a safe driver and nothing bad will happen. If you are in the car with someone else who is driving above the speed limit, you may feel panicked because you perceive them as an unsafe driver, even though it's really about the loss of immediate control). From this exceedingly informed analysis of 24 hr old information, I would guess that your head sees immediate flights as something you can exert control over (by taking xanax, etc) and thus they are not as feared as future flights.

Ta-DA!! Graduate education = justified. Have fun in Chicago, I'm headed there too this weekend :-)
