For the record, I didn't plan my son. Of course, I did plan on having children someday, despite my mental illness, because it is rather treatable.

But you're right, it was irresponsible to bring a child into this world without having a contingency plan for every unknown that could throw us into a difficult spot.

I should have had a longer-term plan that included this economic downturn and the possibility of having a husband laid off from an industry that he wasn't in at the time we married and had my son. I mean heck, everyone else saw this coming, right? And how could I not have planned (prior to conception) for a high-risk pregnancy with a premature child with lifelong health problems.

Boy, I really dropped the ball on this one. Thanks for pointing that out Gladys.

I wouldn't even know where to begin. I am not as brilliant as Sasha with the internet knowledge. Perhaps I will try something over the weekend...

Honestly, I think we need to deal with our public education system first. If we pour all the money we need to into universal health care then education will go by the wayside - even more than it already has. We spend more per capita for education than any other country in the world and we can't even begin to compete.

While it's beyond awesome you were able to have excellent healthcare in France (as expected) and even in Canada, for some it's not a myth. It plagues my family quite frequently, especially when they can't get the specialists that they need.

Also, she had the money before, you can't know that you won't have the money somewhere down the line and it's a ridiculous idea to not have a child because eventually your income might be knocked down.

Of course she knew the reality of healthcare. Who doesn't? Her husband didn't lose his job until (fairly) recently - she couldn't have prepared for that. It's the things we're not expecting that end up affecting us the most.

You're assuming something pretty huge here. You have no idea if she was diagnosed before having her son, or after. Hormones do wacky things to women, and it's quite possible that she didn't start exhibiting bipolar symptoms until postpartum.
Just playing devil's advocate over here.
