Vicious Lies

Seattle?

Is not a rainy place.

I have been nothing but disappointed in the weather here.

I arrived in early April, when it was still gray and misty, but rarely rained. I was sad, because I’d been so excited for the rain, but I was assured it would return in the fall. Then, quickly, it was summer, and it doesn’t rain all summer at all in this city. Every day is sunny and clear. It’s awful when all you wanted from this city was endless rain. And I was so very, very excited for it to be September, when I assumed the rain would arrive in ceaseless torrents. It is now late November, people, and it hardly ever rains here still. It is occasionally cloudy and/or chilly, but, in general, it is relatively clear and warm enough that I can still wear short sleeves without being too terribly uncomfortable. I’m serious. In late November. This is ridiculous. I was lied to.

I have a theory that Seattle people make up lies about how rainy and cold it is here, to dissuade all of California from moving here. They like that they’re not over-populated. They like their laid-back, flannel, brunette, granola culture. They don’t want the rest of the world to know how freaking gorgeous and sunny and crisp and clear and beautiful it is here, even in late November. Except, for me, it worked in reverse. I moved here because I wanted a rainy climate, and have been so devastated to learn that, in reality, it hardly ever rains here.

Maybe it will get rainier in December. A girl can hope, right?

You are welcome to swap with me; it never stops raining in Scotland.

If you're looking for rain and miserable weather, try new orleans. Not only does it rain most of the year except during "winter," which is actually a few chilly weeks spread out between November and February, it's intensely hot and humid enough to make it so you can never fully dry off when you get out of the shower. And hurricanes! And sun so bright that instead of bringing sunny cheer, it makes you curse everything. there is no worse climate, except for maybe rainforests.

If you really want miserable weather move to Hlifax, Nova Scotia.
We had a summer full of rain and now the sun hasn't shone since I don't know when. if you enjoy miserable weather, this is the place to be!

I had the same feeling when I moved up to Bellingham a few years ago. It didn't rain nearly as much as everyone always said. I do think that it is a conspiracy to keep others out. But then there would be times when it would seriously rain for days, weeks, months!! and then I was happy.

Don't worry, December through March should be rainier. You just happened to move here on an off-year ... in years past there have been 30+ day rain records set in the month of November. Go figure.

I think this is a freakish year, that's why. I mean I live in the SF Bay Area and this is cold and rainy weather, and it's been freakishly HOT for the past four days and no rain at all.

I don't like rain, but we do have a draught here in California, so some would be welcomed...
  • If you were hoping for downpours you won't be happy. It's always just this misty bullshit. I came expecting the same torrential tropical rains I had growing up in Florida. I laugh at the rain here. It's not the amount that it rains that drives people nuts it's the gloom that lasts. And unless it's a freakish year, it will last a long time. Don't worry. And to all you Californians, it fucking sucks here. Seriously. We eat children. Stay down there.

Oh Lord, if you need rain then get on over to Glasgow. Let's do a swap. Trust me, if rain is your thing, you'd never be disappointed!
