Vegan Hot Dogs

Posted by – November 16, 2008

Totally recommended, unless you’re partial to eating things that don’t taste disgusting.

  • Yves are tough to find! Any leads?

Yves are yum yum and last time I checked they were vegan! A lot of morningstar stuff has egg whites. Portobello mushroom sandwiches are luvvvvly. I usually fry them up (yeah, not so healthy) with some vegan margarine and then put them on a sandwich with vegan mayo, tomatoes and any other veggies that i feel like consuming at that moment.

never said vegan out loud in my life
  • @ fellow carnivore Down Unda...I like the MorningStar crumbles. In a sauce they taste like ground beef.

Morningstar are the best, but not vegan (egg whites). LightLife Smart Dogs are awesome, too, and they are vegan. Any dogs where tofu is the primary ingredient were pretty gross as I recall.

@Wendie: Oscar Meyer are good too... um, though I don't believe they are vegan either. ;-) (Oh... I'm a carnivore, but love Morningstar sausages and burgers!)

@ Sasha: Have you cooked portabello mushroom burgers yet? My friend apparently makes burgers using portabello mushrooms cooked after soaking in vegan chicken boullion cubes.

Today on "10 a.m." (Australia's version of Regis & Kathy Lee") they were reporting dangers/problems with tofu because of shortcuts taken in the processing of it. I'm a carnivore, so admittedly I didn't pay too much attention to it, but the gist of it has to do with the lack of "pasteurization" of western tofu leaves crap in it that isn't good. Sorry I can't be more specific... might want to take a gander at that... might help with selecting better brands.
  • Morningstar and St. Yves are supposed to be good but I don't believe they are vegan.
  • woohoo
I like lightlife wonder dogs... I like Morningstar too. If you like chilidogs make the chili with the tofu beef stuff and add veggie cheese.. Awesome..

We get the SmartDogs from SmartFoods.

What I've found is that their appeal differs depending on the cooking method. We've microwaved them with varying degrees of success. The best way to cook them is on the gill. Other methods often render them, well, flacid and rubbery or, alternatively, hard and impossible to bite. (hee hee).

    Ketchup and mustard do wonders.
