Go Sasha! Go Sasha!

I'm vegan, and have been for over 2 years now. I was veggie for two weeks, then read all about the suffering and the cruelty inherent in the dairy and egg industries and decided enough was enough - I was not going to let my tastebuds cause suffering! It was the kind of thing that once I learnt it, I couldn't unlearn it.

Basically, being vegan means you have the strength and compassion enough to realise that even though a tim-tam might taste better than a vegan chocolate biscuit, you are actively making a decision to NOT condemn an animal to a (short) life of suffering.

You're doing the right thing, and you're an inspiration to others!!

Quitting cheese is hard because cheese naturally has a type of morphine in it that develops when the cow's milk goes through the cheese making process. So it makes it addictive. True story. Just look up addictive cheese properties and you can read a couple articles on it.

That was my post, Indigo (I forgot to put in my name...duh). I wasn't insinuating anything except the fact that, as vegetarians, we are probably more likely to introduce a wide variety of vegetables in our children's diet. More likely than most parents I mean to say.

I can't tell you how many times non-vegetarians have wondered if my children could possible be healthy and/or happy not eating meat. The main point of my post was to point out that, of course they can and they are.

The funniest thing to me is that non-vegetarians seem to think that we are insulting them simply by being vegetarians. I never proselytize. I never make anyone feel bad about their own food choices. One of my pet peeves has always been negative comments on other people's food.

And yet, I have gotten loads of shit from non-vegetarians regarding my family's choices. And most of the shit comes from relatives. It comes in the form of jokes about eating big pieces of meat to questions about our health to accusations that we are putting our children in danger or that they are somehow missing out because they have never had a chicken nugget or a real hot dog. I really wonder why non-vegetarians have such a problem with those of us who have chosen to forgo eating animals.

While I'm sure your children eat very healthfully and I know that not all vegetarians eat good, healthy stuff all the time, I don't think anyone would argue that, IN GENERAL, vegetarians have more healthy diets than meat eaters.

good luck with this, as a vegetarian it can be hard to explain my food choices to people, and there can be awkward situations where it is hard to find things to eat. but it is definitely worth it! keep it up! :)

"We have two little vegetarian daughters who are happy and healthy (and who eat all kinds of things other kids would never eat, including brussel sprouts)."

OK, this really irritated me. I have 2 kids, both girls, who both love veggies. As a matter of fact, if you put broccoli on the table, you better get your serving first, because they will take all of it!

I just don't like the insinuation that all vegan or vegetarians eat better than omnivores. Just because I eat meat, it doesn't mean I am getting it from McD's.

Well, milk is a tricky thing. Not all humans are actually able to digest milk (appareantly especially in certain Asian countries), but in some regions (especially Scandinavia) people are able to digest milk very well. Milk is very big in the Scandinavian countries and people drink A LOT of it. If you ever saw a bunch of builders finishing several liters of milk in their lunch break, then you know what I mean (seems like the Scandinavians have a mutated gene, which helps to digest milk...read here: http://politiken.dk/videnskab/article445000.ece, sorry, only in Danish...).

about milk...an above post says: "Sure, it’s a little fattening, but it has good nutritional values too: protein, calcium, vitamin C. "

...and so do a lot of other things. we don't actually need milk to survive... especially not all the hormones, etc that were put into it by humans. and one last thing that quite disturbs me about milk...if humans went around suckling cows, it would be outrageous and called "unnatural" but it is supposed to be normal to take the milk meant for baby cows and stick it in bottles to sell at the supermarket for human consumption? ick.

anyone that is truly interested in these topics should check out the book "The Omnivore's Dilema". being born and raised in rural idaho, eating meat was a way of life and not much thought was ever put into doing so for my first 31 years of life. reading this book changed all of that quickly. i still continue to eat meat but only from local sources that i know very well and i have completely stopped purchasing from grocery stores. don't be fooled by organic or free range either; very vague terms and conditions that would upset the most open minded person.
