Okay, I’m Convinced

Bill Harris is a spiritual genius. His latest podcast solidified it in my mind. I’m just completely obsessed with this man’s mind, with his voice, the way he nonchalantly rolls out mind-blowing spiritual truths as though he were calling roll.

But I also think he might be kind of evil. He sales and marketing techniques are reminiscent more of Biblical debt collectors than of Jesus. He wastes no opportunity to plug his (over-priced) products or to name-drop. I ordered a free demo CD from him (so I could hear his voice, before I found his podcasts) and now I’m inundated with hard-sell emails all the time.

And, yet, every time I listen to anything he has to say, I’m blown away by how strongly it resonates with me and what a depth of spiritual understanding he seems to possess. How casually he seems to possess it.

Can one carry a true spiritual message and also be kind of a self-absorbed con-man at the same time?

Answer: Definitely; witness Chaucer's Pardoner in Canterbury Tales, who tells wonderful stories with deep meaning and good morals in order to make other people repent for their sins and buy those wotsits that let them get away with whatever they do.
